Serious

The last Supercup between Spanish teams took place 2 days ago in Tangier’s Ibn Batouta Stadium. Bizarrely, it was downgraded by its organisers the Royal Spanish Football Federation from a ‘professional’ match under the rules of La Liga to a ‘friendly’ in all but name. Sevilla were incensed by the decision, which also perplexed . The teams and players took it seriously – Barça won it 2-1.

UEFA were never going to disrespect their own trophy, the last of the so-called friendlies – a misnomer if ever there was one. A Madrid derby, a friendly? Perish the thought. The clubs and players always take these matches seriously with or without a trophy at stake.

Expect a physical, but tactical battle, as Diego Simeone seeks to overturn Real’s advantage, and Julen Lopetegui attempts to show that there is life after Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinédine Zidane.
