No Excuse Says Nyirenda

FORMER Zambia National Team coach Wedson Nyirenda feels there is no excuse for Chipolopolo’s failure to qualify to next year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals given the relatively manageable teams that were in their group.

Nyirenda, who at the weekend delivered the first ever trophy for his new team Baroka Football Club of Limpompo Province in South Africa, said in an exclusive interview with Satish Sekar.

“There is no reason for excuse; Zambia was in relatively weaker group compared to the World Cup group I played and recorded fair results,” he said.

Nyirenda said that if Zambia managed to beat a full Namibian squad with locally based players, he wondered why they could struggle to beat them at full strength.

He recalled how as coach he managed to steal back-to-back win against Algeria, a team rated number one in Africa, and also put up a good fight against Nigeria.

Zambia has failed to pull off qualification from the group containing Namibia, Guinea Bissau and Mozambique, and do so with a match to spare.

In the Telkom Knockout Final played at Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa last weekend, Baroka FC beat highly rated Orlando Pirates 3 – 2 on post-match penalties after a 2 – 2 draw in extra-time play.

Baroka had Zambians in Nyirenda and former AFCON winner, Davies Nkausu, while Augustine Mulenga and Justin Shonga lined up for Pirates.
