Mozambique Bounce Back

Smarting from a poor first half that cost his team dear against unfancied Madagascar, Abel Xavier made it very clear that he would not tolerate under-estimating opponents. There was no repetition as Mozambique put three past the Comoros to ease into second place. It was a much improved all round performance.

However, it took almost 40 minutes to pierce the Comoros’ rear-guard action. Defender, Ferroviario Maputo, known as Jeitoso, opened the scoring after 39 minutes. Knowing that goal-difference could prove important, Mozambique chased more, doubling their lead through Luis Miquissone a minute before the break – the first of his break. A minute into added time Miquissone was cautioned.

Less than 5 minutes into the second half the Comoros’ Abdallah Ali Mohamed was booked. Miquissone completed his brace and also the scoring after 72 minutes to give Xavier’s team a comfortable win, although there was still time for Edmilson Dave to pick up a pointless booking 3 minutes into added time – a minor blot on the win. Mozambique had to hope for a favour from the Seychelles in the second match of the double-header.
