Minnows send Mozambique to Bottom of the Group

Having seen Madagascar upset Mozambique in the first match of the tournament, the Comoros and the Seychelles – both islands and minnows – piled on the misery for former Liverpool and Everton defender, Abel Xavier, now coaching the land of his birth, Mozambique, by drawing 1-1.

A scoreless first half ended with a last minute yellow card for the Comoros’ Camel Youssefa. With an hour played, Mohamed M’Changama gave the Comoros the lead. Knowing that the Comoros were likely to be the weakest in the group that gave the Seychelles little option but to chase an equaliser and hope for more.

Almost 25 minutes later Leroy Coralie set up a frantic finish with the equaliser. Midfielder, Karl Hall was yellow carded with less than five minutes of normal time remaining, as was the Comoros’ goalkeeper Salim ben Boina after 4 minutes of added time.

Both teams had a chance, but knew that would need results against the better fancied teams, now that Madagascar had moved into pole position in Group A. Mozambique were not out of it, but would need a favour, but that favour could also benefit the minnow at Xavier’s team’s expense.
