Malawi Hold Botswana

An early strike by Malawian defender, Precious Sambani, of all people, after just 7 minutes threatened to throw Group B wide open. However, Major David Bright, often referred to by his military rank, and in his fourth spell in charge of the Zebras had other ideas.

Bright saw his young charges – he wanted to blood young players – fight back after a young defender had put his team on the back foot. Sambani had only turned 20 a week before the COSAFA Castle Cup began.

Peter Cholopi was the first to earn the officials’ displeasure, yellow-carded after 48 minutes. On the hour mark, Onkabetse Makgantai, one of the goal-scorers from the previous match, joined him in the referee’s book. 19 –year-old defender Tshepo Maikano was the last to be yellow-carded with just 15 minutes remaining.

The Zebras claimed a point with two minutes of normal time remaining. Kabelo Seakanyeng grabbed his second of the tournament, ensuring that Botswana topped Group B, going into the last round of group matches. Botswana, on 4 points, led Angola and Mauritius by a point with Malawi trailing on a point.
