Fresh from inheriting temporary charge of the Chipolopolo after the departure of Wedson Nyirenda to South Africa’s Premier Soccer League, Beston Chambeshi gained bragging rights over Ricardo Mannetti’s Namibia 4-3 on penalties.

Namibia were quickly put on the back foot in the penalty shoot-out as Ronald Ketjijere and Riaan Hanamub failed to score, while midfielders Collins Sikomba and Jackson Chirwa put Zambia 2-0 up. Emilio Martin pulled one back. Late developer Lazarous Kambole – he was 27 when he made his debut for Zambia – was the next up. He was the only Zambian to fail to score. Goalkeeper, Toaster Nsabata, was next up and scored, meaning Denzil Haosab had to score – he did. Clatous Chama converted his to put Zambia through.

A cagy 0-0 draw was punctuated by first half yellow cards for Vitapi Ngaruka after 23 minutes and with 2 minutes of the first half remaining Benson Sakala earned the displeasure of Botswanan referee, Tirelo Mositwane. Substitute Ronald Kampamba, who had replaced John Ching’andu after 70 minutes, had barely been on the pitch ten minutes when he was booked with less than ten minutes of normal time remaining.

Nerves grew as there would be no extra time – it would go straight to penalties. But the bigger story was the Zambians who weren’t in South Africa and why.
