Likuena Progress at Eswatini’s Expense

Sera Motebang’s 71st minute goal proved enough for Moses Maliehe’s Likuena (the Crocodiles) to advance to consign Eswatini (Swaziland) to the Plate semi-final. Lesotho went through to the semi-final of the COSAFA Castle Cup, and a probable tie against defending champions, Zimbabwe, who face Botswana tomorrow.

Basia Makepe demanded the very best from Swaziland’s keeper, Sandanezwe Mathabela, with a magnificent effort after 25 minutes. Mathabela was forced to tip over Makepe’s long range volley, which had looked likely to break the deadlock until the keeper’s intervention. Tony Tsabedze’s fine effort, which glanced off the crossbar was as close as Eswatini came, but had it been inches lower, it wouldn’t have mattered as the veteran midfielder was offside.

A cagey affair should have seen Lesotho’s goalkeeper, Likano Mputhi, punished for fumbling a cross, but his defence blocked the threat posed by Bongani Steenkamp and Felix Badenhorst.

Motebang then made a great impact, scoring as a result of a well worked set-piece, and being denied an assist by the woodwork as Luciano Matoso attempted to profit from his cross.
