Gent Add to Anderlecht’s Woes

Facing an injury crisis that had ruled out Lazar Marković and Andy Najar, among others Hein Vanhaezebrouck knew that his Anderlecht side faced an uphill struggle against Gent. And so it proved on the pitch. Moses Simon’s strike gave Gent all three points and thanks to other results guaranteed his team at least a shot at European football next season.

Around midway through the second half determined and skilled defending turned thwarting Anderlecht into the match-winning attack. Nana Asare’s interception and determination not to concede possession resulted in a swift break on the left flank, which allowed Roman Yaremchuk to maraud down the left wing until he squared it to Simon. The Nigerian international, who had played under Vanhaezebrouck when he was Gent’s trainer, made no mistake at the far post to score the only goal of the match.

Yuya Kubo almost doubled the lead as another quick break resulted in Matz Sels just beating Simon to the ball well outside his area. His lob bounced tantalisingly over the bar – it deserved better. As early as the 6th minute Kubo’s cross gave Dylan Bronn the opportunity to test Sels, who was equal to the task. Five minutes later Anderlecht’s injury woes worsened as Kenny Saief had to go off for treatment – he was subsequently replaced by Francis Amuzu.

Just over 20minutes into the match Łukasz Teordorczyk attempted a bicycle kick from a corner, but his effort just cleared the bar. Teodorczyk looked the most likely to get Anderlecht something, but his audacious back-heel from close range that capped a good attack went just wide of Lovre Kalinić’s right hand post.

Wit half time approaching Teodorczyk squandered a good chance without requiring Kalinić to make a save and at the other end Sels punched clear, winning a free-kick with minimal if any contact. Needing a win Anderlecht seemed content to let the hosts make the running. Simon was put through by Samuel Gigot, but shot over. Five minutes later Leander Dendoncker was booked for a bad foul in Kubo, who recovered enough to latch onto Bronn’s pass but shot over from outside the box.

Two minutes after Simon gave Gent the lead Franko Andijasević’s pass was collected by Kubo, whose shot was tipped over by Sels. With 13minutes remaining Bronn was rightly cautioned for a bad foul on Pieter Gerkens.

Andelecht could not find an equaliser, let alone the winner they needed, but Gent are assured of at least a chance of European football next season, barring a very improbable result at between Standard and Charleroi next weekend.
