Liverpool’s Joe Gomez has joined Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere in withdrawing from the England squad to face Italy at Wembley on Tuesday.

Both players have returned to their clubs for further assessment of the injuries suffered. Gomez suffered an ankle injury 6 minutes into  Friday’s 1-0 friendly win over the Netherlands. Wilshere, has withdrawn with what has been described a minor knee problem.

Gomez, the  20-year-old Liverpool defender, sustained the injury in the early stages of just his third senior national appearance, having been given the opportunity to start as part of an experimental back three, selected by Southgate in the Dutch capital.

Gomez has played 29 times for Liverpool in all competitions this season.

Wilshere, was hoping to make his first England appearance since Euro 2016, when he was part of the England side, dumped out of the competition by minnows Iceland. With Italy being the last game before the World Cup squad announcement, Wilshere will be reliant on club form between now and the end of the season to convince manager Gareth Southgate to select him for this summers world cup in Russia.
