As the Ashes series began today in Brisbane’s Gabba, the Adelaide Oval, which will host the first Day/Night Test of this series, saw Tasmania Tigers’ Jake Doran hit an unbeaten century against the South Australia Redbacks after a stop and start morning session was ravaged by the weather.

The Tigers’ captain George Bailey won the toss and chose to bat. He soon had cause to regret his choice as Alex Doolan was caught behind by Alex Carey off Kane Richardson for a single. Bailey followed for 3, trapped by Joe Mennie. Shortly after lunch Jordan Silk became the first of Tom Cooper’s victims – Cameron Valente being the lucky bowler. Further cameos by Matthew Wade, 30, caught by Jake Weatherald, bowled by Adam Zampa, and Tom Rogers, caught by Redbacks’ captain Travis Head off Richardson for 33, provided much needed support to Doran, who anchored the innings and provided some much needed stability.

A Star Emerges

Zampa added two more to his tally, finishing the day on 3 for 39. Ben McDermott was caught by Mennie for Zampa’s second wicket, and Cooper’s second catch gave Zampa his third scalp, Beau Webster for 4. Sam Rainbird was beaten all ends up by Mennie for just 6, leaving Doran in danger of running out of partners.

The youngster needn’t have worried as Gabe Bell occupied the other end while Doran took advantage to score his maiden first class century – a mature innings, containing nine boundaries, that belied his age. Doran will resume his knock just after 10.00 a.m. tomorrow, having spared the experienced Bailey and the Tigers’ blushes. To the credit of the South Australia Cricket Association (SACA), the public are admitted free to Sheffield Shield matches like this – the ECB could learn from such an approach for its four-day county game.
