The English Football association has today announced that proceeds raised from the 2017 FA Community Shield, will be donated to support those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire.
FA Cup winners Arsenal, will play Premier League champions Chelsea on 6 August at Wembley Stadium, in a re-run of the 2017 FA Cup final, which Arsenal won 2-1 after extra time. It was Chelsea talisman Diego Costa’s last match for the English champions.
It is hoped that up to £1.25m could be raised from the match. That would be a welcome boost to all those affected by the devastating tragedy. FA chairman Greg Clarke stated: “We hope that in some small way through the Community Shield we can help.”
He went on to add “Football is for all, and we hope it can in its own way give something back to those who are most in need.”
As many as Seventy-nine people are missing or presumed dead after the blaze destroyed 150 homes in the Kensington tower block, a little over a week ago.
It is also believed that survivors, the families of the victims and emergency services personnel will be invited to the game as guests.
