Caen halt Impressive Dijon Start

Dose of Reality

Dijon FCO came crashing back to reality tonight. Olivier Dall’oglio’s side were beaten 2-0 at home by lowly Caen. Enzo Crivelli scrambled in the first off keeper Rúnar Rúnarsson’s right-hand post after 20 minutes, and chasing an equaliser, Dijon were caught out on a quick counter attack in second half added time. Rúnarsson was beaten to the ball by Claudio Beauvue who surged forward to score easily with seconds of the match remaining.

Five minutes before Caen surprised the Gaston Gerard faithful, Caen keeper, Brice Samba, snuffed out the danger of Jules Keita’s through-ball to Júlio Tavares’ with the striker poised to shoot. Ten minutes later Tavares got to a long ball, but hoisted his lob over the keeper and bar too. Just over half an hour into the match Saif’s free-kick required Samba to tip it round the post for a corner.

Sucker-Punched

With just under a quarter of an hour of normal time remaining Samba was deservedly booked for time-wasting – he’d started early. Two minutes later after fantastic skill by Keita created an opportunity Tavares went down under Adama Mbengue’s challenge. After consultation, play continued without Dijon getting the penalty they wanted.

Deep into injury time Rúnarsson was caught out high in his own half as Beauvue latched on to a counter-attacking long pass and bore down on an empty net to double Caen’s lead and make the points safe.

Despite an impressive debut, Moroccan youngster, Nayef Aguerd, did not play. Dall’oglio sees great potential in Aguerd, but does not intend to rush him.
