With a place in Africa’s most prestigious club competition the Champions League within grasp, Pitso Mosimane’s fixture-addled Mamelodi Sundowns, take on Casablanca’s Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) tomorrow afternoon.

The ‘Brazilians’ are trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Morocco, but Mosimane and opposite number Fouad Benzarti insist that they are under no pressure and will play their usual game of attacking football.

Sundowns are tied with Orlando Pirates at the top of the PSL, but their goal difference is 4 worse than the Buccaneers. This is Sundowns’ second Champions League programme in a year and that is taking a toll.

“There is no team in South Africa that has a programme like us – no one,” Mosimane said.

“It is unbelievable. They just play football.

“They are never home with their families but look at them. They are fighting and still want to win it.”

He insists that there is no pressure, and Benzarti scoffed at the suggestion that the triumph of bitter rivals Raja Athletic Club (also of Casablanca) in the Confederation Cup last season puts any pressure on him to deliver an African trophy this season.

He told journalists that the Champions League is a different level to the Confederation Cup, so Raja winning that trophy does not compare.

Both teams pledged to attack, but not recklessly.

“We will attack,” Benzarti told journalists at the pre-match press conference at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

“However, it’s important to be good in defence and attack as well.

“If they attack, they will open up and we will try to make them pay.”

Mosimane, however, wants his team to play smart. They have to score, but conceding affects the balance too.

“You can’t play thinking about stopping them from scoring because that means you won’t attack,” Mosimane said.
“If you attack recklessly‚ you are going to be vulnerable at the back‚ so it is a short winter blanket.

“You try and do as much as you can to defend‚ but we need to attack because we need a goal. Maybe after the goal‚ it will be a different story but I believe there is more than one goal here.”
