Angola Bounce Back

Francisco Filho saw his team squander the opportunity they had fought hard to create as the Palancas Negras clawed their way back into contention. The cautions piled up again – four for Mauritius and three for Angola.

Chow and Chico Caputo notched up cautions before half an hour had been played before Hansley Patate picked up his second of the tournament as did Mauritius’ hero from the defeat of Malawi, Balisson, just before the break. No sooner had the match restarted than Andy Sophie joined them in the referee’s book.

Both teams had gone in level, 0-0, at half-time. Angola needed a result more than Mauritius, but Filho made a fateful substitution in the break. He brought on defender Emmanuel Vincent for Luther Rose to shore up the defence. It would become a half Vincent and Filho would want to forget. Vincent put into his own net after 63 minutes – the only goal of the match and two minutes after Angolan defender Ze was cautioned, Vincent also found his way into the referee’s book.

Angola had dragged themselves back into contention, level with Mauritius. Both had to hope that Malawi could open up the whole group by beating Botswana in the second match of the final double-header of the group stage.
