AFCON, Temperature, Humidity

AFCON 2019 is about to start in Cairo’s International Stadium, 13.5 years after Egypt last hosted African football’s most prestigious event. That was the start of the Pharaohs’ unprecedented three in a row. Egypt then went through rough times, failing to qualify until 2017 when they reached the final but lost to Cameroon. They reached the World Cup, but Mohamed Salah’s injury in the UEFA Champions League Final took its toll on their prospects.

Now a fit Salah , fresh from winning the Champions League leads Egypt’s charge for history, their 8th AFCON title.

Despite the late kick off 10.00 p.m. the temperature is a staggering 29˚ C with half an hour to go and the humidity is 44%. It’s going to be hot, hot, hot. And this is North-Africa. Imagine what it would have been in Cameroon, the nation who should have hosted this event.

Cameroon will host in two years time, but is this in the best interests of the players? There’ll be water breaks (including three minutes rest) after 30 minutes and 75.
